• What I Really Think of the Twilight Saga

My friend Rita, who just celebrated her first blog anniversary, showed me this funny spoof of Twilight’s book cover. LOL.

While it’s true that I called myself a fan of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling saga a couple of times before, I am not offended every time I read a bad review about it. Truth is, I also have my own set of negative opinions of the Twilight series, especially when it comes to the “values” it teaches. I don’t, of course, think that I am actually that naive to be influenced by it, I just wish the kids who read it are smart enough to distinguish right from wrong. For one, giving up everything (your life, your youth, your family, your parents’ trust, academics, opportunities, among others) for that seemingly perfect guy (vampire or otherwise!) is severely frowned upon. Come on Bella, aren’t you supposed to be the strong, independent one?

I’ve also been openly admitting that I didn’t like the 4th book, Breaking Dawn. In one word, I’d describe it as ridiculous. I could enumerate the reasons why I think that is but I’m afraid I just might get flamed by other Twilight fans out there! Hee. I believe Cathy Deen’s review about it pretty much sums up what I think.

Don’t get me wrong, I loved the Twilight saga. It’s just that, Book 4 kinda ruined it for me. I feel that it was as if the first 3 books were written by one author, and the fourth by another. Prior to reading the last installment, I had a lot expectations of how the story could have ended. I guess I wasn’t too happy about the way the author made everything in Breaking Dawn too easy. It’s just too many “closures” and “conclusions” crammed into one book! But that’s just my opinion.

And what is this whole hullabaloo over Twilight versus Harry Potter about? Twilight is great in its own way, but Harry Potter is something else. The Harry Potter series may just be the best, most engrossing fiction I’ve ever read. Believe me, setting some time aside to read those seven fantastic, albeit thick, books is definitely worth it. And the final book (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) was wonderfully concluded. I love plots with lots of sensible twists and turns!

But even after having said all that, I’m still excited to see the Twilight movie that will premiere in Manila this Wednesday. I wanna see how they translated the novel into a movie — and to see how good (or bad?) Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart played Edward and Bella. After all, I did enjoy reading Stephenie Meyer’s first novel.

Btw, her other novel called The Host is actually pretty good too.

    agree agree agree!

I agree! I was a fan of the series before the fourth book and when the fourth book came around, i suddenly hated Bella even more and I had no desire to re-read any of the previous books. :| Bella became the biggest Mary Sue ever and I hated the way the last book ended. :|

My friend who I convinced to read the series (haha I still recommend it just for discussion :D) told me all books did not have climax. It’s like the entire saga is one big build up to Breaking Dawn. Ergh.

I still think Jacob is the saving grace of the series. Heh.

  3. Aurus says:

    LOL at the picture.

  4. Ade says:

I don’t read Twilight, but judging from the scathing reviews I’ve read, I’m so LOL-ing at the pic now.

  5. Michelle says:

Haha Funny sang pic! I hope Stephenie Meyer will get a chance to see it and have a great laugh.

I’m excited to see the movie too (as almost everyone is!) even though I don’t really consider myself a die-hard Twilight fan (eg. wearing I love Edward Cullen shirts). :) I’ve only read the first book of the Twilight Saga (yeah, I’m so behind! LOL) and I think it’s just an “OK” book. When I’ll be able to finish reading the 4 books, chances are I’ll also agree with your thoughts on Breaking Dawn. :)

  6. Regnard says:

I think Twilight will suck… as in bloodsuck. :P

  7. shavei7 says:

I saw this movie TWICE. First on Friday night (premier) and then on Tuesday night. I wasn’t a Twilight fan (haven’t even read the book, and haven’t heard about it until they released the trailer and it’s EVERYWHERE) but damn that movie got to me. I’m trying so hard to resist reading the books because I don’t want to get addicted (although I think I already am judging by the number of twilight related videos I’ve watched in youtube).

Robert Pattinson is HOOOOOT. Rob and Kristen looks so good together I hope they’re really dating. Too bad Stewart already has a boyfriend.

    :)

And so the lion fell in love with the lamb…
    what a stupid lamb..
    what a sick masochistic lion…

    waaahhhhhhhh
    I’m hopeless

  8. liz says:

same with shavei, I watched the movie twice!!! I love the movie but haven’t read the book series though…

    how are you jowwnee?

  9. Joni says:

    @liz – I’m okay, Lizeeeee!

I’ve only seen the movie once. Still thinking whether I should watch it again or not. Haha! I liked the movie. Note that I didn’t say “love”. hee

  10. shavei7 says:

@liz: the books si soo good liz! haha yes I finally gave in and read it. I jsut finished it (in one day!). I have all 4 books now :P

@joni: I guess most people who’ve read the book first will feel a little disappointed with the movie. I know they left a lot of scenes and changed some but I understand why scriptwriters did that. It’s impossible to follow the book and cram everything in 2 hours :) waahhh newest obsession ko. mabasa na ko sang new moon hehhe

  11. cha says:

i dont agree,, edward, after being a vampire still continues to go to school, he even graduated many times in college. maybe bella would the same too after her aging would stop. there are still good lessons that can be learned in the book, kids are kids, when they grow older they would just laugh about it (getting married with cullen :D)

  12. Jaypee says:

Like Ade, I’m not a fan but I’ve seen the book from my sister-in-law who’s an avid fan and I’m LMAO right now. :D

  13. shavei7 says:

*cough* *so typical guy reaction* cough* cough*

    hehe

  14. Joni says:

Shavei7: True. Kung malantaw na nila ang movie or mabasa nila ang book, siguro manamian mn sila. hehehe! peace @jaypee. :P

  15. Tiffy says:

Did you watch na ba? :p Hahaha.

Btw, I didn’t like Twilight cause it was written badly :/

  16. tarits says:

twilight is really no comparison with harry potter… wala talaga.

the series reminds me of those romance novels that i used to read by the boxful in HS. almost the same inane, predictable plot, writing style level (pang grade 6), same do-real-people-speak-like-this? dialogue, same 2 dimensional characters, etc.

for some weird reason, the result is very addicting. probably because you don’t use your brain much at all, just go with the flow and gush over impossibly perfect characters who get everything they want.

but i enjoyed reading them… esp in comparison with our readings in graduate school, brain rest hehe. easy to please naman ako sa books e. good luck na lang if i will still remember the books a year from now.

    should i watch the movie?

  17. Joni says:

Tarits: True, Twilight is perfect for mindless entertainment. hehe.

Let’s watch the movie! Samahan kita. haha

  19. MImi says:

    I don’t think so
It’s stupid to put a picture of a toilet
I don’t read books before appearance of this saga
and I don’t think there is any book that is better than this saga
    even harry potter
maybe the films of harry poter are better than the film of twilight
but the books of twilight are better than the books of harry potter

  20. olivia says:

omg i LOVE the movie AND all the books they are amazing and yes they are SO better than harry potter and i thought they were good. Edward is freaking georgeous and bella is so cute they are great together, those books are fantastic and i want every one to try and read them , the movie was a BIT of a let-down after the book because they cut out some bits but i still thought it was great!:P peace peeps

  21. Johanna says:

I completely agree with this review. The fourth book disappointed me greatly. If i’m going to be built up the ENTIRE time for this fight scene… i’d better damn well have a fight scene!!! ah!!! made me so angry. That could have been the greatest scene ever and she just skips it!?!? bad bad move. and the child with the gayest name known to man kind. weird. just weird. i had nothing to contemplate after all of it other than why there isn’t a man like edward in the world! disappointment city.

  22. Joni says:

Re: the fight scene – you’re absolutely right. It would have been really cool if they went through with it.

I hated the name, too. Lol.

  23. Kristal says:

I don’t see it as Bella giving everything up, she never wanted school and if you read Breaking Dawn she didn’t completly give up her family, she still has her dad and has gained a bigger family. Also, by being with Edward she feels that she is better than she was on her own. She chose to do what she did because she never really felt more than average as a person, she never felt she was good at anything. Edward made her feel like she was somethhing special. I don’t see her as giving up anything, she just adding to her family, gaining confidence in her self.

  24. Ai~ says:

I can’t believe I just saw this, but I was laughing so hard at the “Toilet” cover. :D Never read any of the Twilight series; I probably should get around to it. :P

  25. Sphynx says:

Disappointed with the ending? Check out some alternate ones, by other authors, hehe.

  26. Raymund says:

im a guy who read twilight and i must say you are right aboutthe book 4 part..plus the fact that bella should have chosen otherwise…kaso nga lang puso pinairal niya eh… as for harry potter…that series totally rocks!

  27. this pic is a bit f**ked up
i mean watt the hell. when i sor this pic i was on the floor laughing my guts out. i looked it up the next day and i sor the people for it and i cracked up laughing again. my sister told me there names where edpar and brest but i didn’t belive her i meen love twilight sooooooooooooooo much i have it all over my wall and im soooooooo in to robert pattinson and just a bit of my wall has toilet because its sooo funny
