• Atin Cu Pung Singsing

The title of this post is Kapampangan for “I have a ring.” Or in my case, “I had a ring.” Today I spent a considerable amount of time mulling over the silver ring that I lost more than a month ago.

I had it on last before I got that massage on June 21st (I remember the day because that was the day before my brother’s wedding). I took it off and placed it in one of the pockets of my bag and forgot all about it. I was only reminded to look for it that night I went out with the girls when Riz started taking photos of Liz’s engagement ring. I didn’t panic that night yet, I told Mae I was gonna deal with my bag when I get home. Now I’ve rummaged my bag for the nth time and found no sign of the ring. It must have fallen off somewhere along the way. Whatta scatterbrain this Joni is.

That ring was not a engagement ring, a promise ring or anything like that. And it certainly was not a wedding ring. It was the ring that my aunt gave me when I was just 10 years old. Back then it only fit in my thumb, then years later, I moved it to my left ring finger — no significance there, it’s just where it fits best. Some people I just met were intrigued by it, I even received a lot of questions when I was at this month-long summer camp in Cebu five years ago, like “Who’s the unlucky man?” Lol. I always just answered that I’ve had the ring since I was in elementary, it was like a part of my body already — they usually stop badgering or teasing me after that. The ring was just naturally there in my finger that I didn’t notice it anymore. Which is why it took a long time before I realized it was missing.

Ah, this is a moot point anyway. I just wanted to share my frustration. I’m gonna miss my favorite silver ring. I know it may not be worth that much (at the jewelry store) but it meant something sentimental to me. I’ve had it for 14 years! Give or take a few months, heh. Now I only have the fast-fading tan line on my left ring finger to prove that it existed.

I can somewhat relate to this Kapampangan folk song:

    Atin cu pung singsing
    Metung yang timpukan
Amana que iti quing Indung ibatan
    Sangkan queng sininup
    Quiñg metung a caban
    Meuala ya iti, ecu camalayan

    Ing sucal ning lub cu
    Susucdul qñg banua
    Picurus cung gamat
    Babo ning lamesa
    Ninu mang manaquit
    Quiñg singsing cung mana
    Calulung pusu cu
    Manguinu ya ceca
    [English translation]

…except, I’m not willing to give my heart to anyone who finds the ring just as the song says. :D

You remind me of my older brother, heh. He has a silver ring, too, that his gf gave him (during their first year together, I think, and they’re now on year 4 or 5 ^_^), and he never fails to freak out every time he misplaces it. He did a lot of that when he was here to visit, hahaha.

But aw, sorry to hear that you’ve really lost it. Especially after having it for so long! :/ Are you thinking of getting a new ring to “replace” (but not really because that one had sentimental value and all) it?

i lost my gold star ring the day i was hired in smart. i only found it again – buried under my disaster area of a cabinet – 10 months later when my contract ended.

    rings are sneaky creatures…

Oh so that’s what the song means… Anyway, I know how you feel, I hate losing things. Even if it’s just a hanky! I get attached to my things easily.

I’m sorry about the ring Jon’. You’re not alone though – I’ve also lost jewelries given to me by my Mom. Believe it or not, over the years I’ve lost a necklace, a pair of earrings and a bracelet. Kompleto! What makes it worse is that they’re not fancy jewelries, so it’s like I’ve thrown thousands of money. And my Mom doesn’t give me jewelries anymore because of my “katangadalan”. Haayy. I always ask myself when will I ever learn. hehe
