• Beware of Angry 3rd Graders

After I’ve read the 3 books about martyr Rachel Scott and the Columbine High School Massacre that happened in 1999, hearing news about teenagers involved in illegal possession of firearms and school shootings no longer shocked me. But when I watched the news this morning about 3rd Graders in Waycross, Georgia who plotted to knock out, handcuff and stab their teacher last Friday, I was seriously alarmed.

Those kids ages 8 to 10 brought a paperweight, a steak knife, and handcuffs to school with a plot to attack their teacher. Apparently, they got mad after the teacher punished one of their classmates. They said the plot was organized enough that the students each had a role in it such as covering the classroom windows and cleaning up the mess. Their “plan” was unraveled when another student reported that a classmate had a knife in her backpack.

While “experts” believe that the children were just being playful and would not actually have followed through with it, I on the other hand (an ordinary individual, tsss!) find the news alarming. Don’t you? I mean, if they wanted to get back at their teacher, they should have just thought of a less cruel revenge. Maybe spread a nasty rumor or make fun of the teacher when she’s not looking. Coz that’s what my classmate did when we were in high school. Lolz.

I hope those kids realize the gravity of what they could have done — if they were actually serious about it. 8, 9, and 10 are such young ages. When I was their age all my classmates and I could think about was the bell finally ringing for recess so we can get on with our Patintero tournament! The cruelest thing I’ve witnessed in school then was when two of my classmates screamed foul words at each other and didn’t speak for a whole year. Life was simpler then. Heh. :p

Read the whole story about the 3rd graders here. What’s the world coming to??

Uhm have you heard about the kid who died because of Naruto? Apparently the other kids bury one of their playmate on the sandbox and died.

    Kids now are really…scary o_O

This isn’t new to me. Hehe, I’ve had similar experience when I was 7 or 8? My playmates and I didn’t exactly plan to attack an adult but rather some “opposing” rival group in the neighborhood. But all we had were sticks and stones and our limp arms to wrestle and feet to run away from them. But the emotions were there.

Probably we’re just watching too much martial arts, Bio Man and Shaider. :D

I wouldn’t wonder if this is caused by too much exposure to such media.

Oh my goodness that is incredibly alarming. Kids these days, they get exposed to so much violence

when they can’t really know the gravity of the repercussions of their actions. I’ve been a witness to a

similar incident at the university where I teach, good thing nothing happened there, it was all just big

talk, but the point was, you can never tell when it’s just going to be “just talk” or you’re going to

construe that as a “threat.” In this case there really was intent to commit bodily harm — good Lord,

what IS the world coming to? Children in that age are supposed to be angelic. They’re now little

savages beholden to the whispers of the devil. I shudder at the thought (because I’m a teacher myself,

to think students can and WILL do that to you!), and to older kids who are capable of doing so much

more. Wow. And I just turned your comments page into a blog entry, lol. Sorry about that. I meant to

say I enjoyed reading your blog, and it’s nice to know you’re Pinoy too :) God bless and more power!

    Cheers,

I remember reading about that story somewhere on April 1st… And I thought that it was an April Fool’s joke. o_O

wow! murderers at the age of 8??? I can’t imagine my little sister plotting something like that when all that matters in her world is Strawberry Shortcake! Hehe!

These kids should better be in the care of professional child psychologists.

    Crap. That’s scary. O_o

The Brothers Karamazov, the classic Russian novel written over a hundred years ago, has a scene with schoolboys fighting that reminds me that kids have been aggressive and disturbed even before the time of too much violent tv… You know?
