Is it just me or are these pharmaceutical comment spams starting to get on everyone’s nerves too? It’s only the start of the week, I only had more or less 3 hours of sleep last night, the tall latte isn’t working its magic, and then I open my mailbox only to be greeted by a bunch of annoying comments spam!

This is obviously not the type of spam that the great and powerful Akismet is made to filter since it doesn’t contain 2 or more links — or any links on that matter — so I don’t know what else to do with these comments except to mark them as spam one by one.

Please tell me I’m not alone in this?

A few days I got to chat with someone who’s working on optimizing pharmaceutical websites. The pharmaceutical industry is probably one of the most (if not the most) competitive industries online, so I can just imagine how hard it is for them to promote these websites. Then I remembered the uncontrollable comment spamming going on in my blog and I wondered if SEO people working on these pharmaceutical websites are desperate enough to go as far as manually spamming other people’s blogs through comments!

No, I’m not accusing anyone, I was just wondering! :D

Until I find a solution — I mean, if someone else finds a solution and then tells me about it (LOL) — I’m limited to just placing these strange pharmaceutical words one by one in the Options > Discussion > Comment Blacklist section. Hopefully, that’ll lessen the comments spams I’m getting.

Do you think these spam comments are automated or human? If they’re human-added, then CAPTCHAs might not work at all. Otherwise CAPTCHAs are a simple means of stopping a majority of automated comments. The problem is, CAPTCHAs also tend to discourage legitimate commenters from commenting. I guess you’ve already my anti-spam blog post, right? ;)

  8. Joni says:

Eugene: Yes, on some level, I think these spam comments are done by humans! haha.. If that’s the case, then CAPTCHAs won’t work.

No, i haven’t read your anti-spam blog post..daan ako sa blog mo later. :)

  9. Eugene says:

Joni, you’ve already read it. In fact, you’re the first one who commented on it. Unless you just skimmed through it. :-p

  10. Joni says:
