  • The Best Boss

    5

Two weeks ago, our [ex-]manager took us all out to dinner. We thought that it was just one of his innocent, out-of-the-blue dinner blowouts but it turned out to be one shocking supper for all us. After we’ve polished off our plates he situated himself in front of all of us and told us a very bad news. We were caught off guard when we heard him admit that he already turned in his resignation and he’s gonna be leaving the company sooner than we expected. He told us to wait two weeks before we talk or blog about his leaving, so now it’s two weeks later, and I’m blogging about it.

You see, our manager was no ordinary boss. If it’s safe to say this, then allow me to say that he’s the best boss we (or at least, I) ever had. I even received a forwarded e-mail a few minutes ago about a joke centered around hating work and wittingly suggesting that we “kill the boss”, and I immediately thought of Sir Joel and how that e-mail was, in no way, applicable to him. I got very sad again, even more when I read her post about him.

Sir Joel was the kind of boss who believed in all of us, who had a habit of saying “kaya nyo yan!“, even though we always complained that we can’t do it. He seldom acts like a “boss” since he’s more like a friend to all of us. He’s down-to-earth and very generous.. and because of that God is blessing him more and more each month (in the form of Google Adsense checks. LOL). He’s also a great PHP programmer, yet you won’t find a trace of pride in him. I don’t know how he managed to create those scripts, programs and tools. All I know is that he works like magic. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him someday more successful that he is now.

The repercussions of his leaving our team are catastrophic, if you can believe that. Okay, I may just be exaggerating. Hehe.

Last Friday was his last day. We gave him a greeting card and a customized purple t-shirt. I’m not sure if he liked it though coz I was busy playing with his adorable son, Janssen, when they handed it to him. It was the first and last time he brought his son to the office. I think it was a good thing that we were all enticed with Janssen’s cuteness that we got distracted from feeling sorrowful that day. Even so, the final goodbye at the elevator lobby broke our hearts a little.

    farewell, sir joel and janssen!

Today, we no longer see him walking and/or joking around the office. We don’t openly talk about his absence but I know it will be a while before we can finally get over this “tragedy” and accept that this is just the way it’s supposed to be. We’re definitely gonna miss our Barney.. :(

Sir Joel, if you’re reading this, I hate you for leaving! Hmp! Hehe, joke lng po. :P

After weeks of studying the complexities of Wordpress, I have finally arrived at finishing my own theme from scratch. It’s not much to look at but I guess it will do for a pure-CSS, table-free layout I did for the first time. I can’t say that it was an easy task though. It actually involved a lot of staying-up-late, googling, analyzing, editing, tinkering, fiddling, and a bunch of “trial and errors”. I wanna say that I want to do this often, but I won’t, as by doing so takes so much of my time — and brain cells. LOL. And oh, I would still very much rather design layouts using Tables, despite the growing CSS trend today.

Yes, I’m sure there are still errors around here somewhere. If you happen to encounter one, please please let me know. I wouldn’t know what to do first hand, but maybe I can google it or consult some experts. LOL. Or if you are a Wordpress aficionado, I would wholeheartedly accept comments, suggestions, and tutorials from you. :)

    My Brother
Good news! To those of who you have read my rant a while back about this brother of mine who’s been unemployed for months, I’m happy to let you know that he’s finally found a job! We’ve been praying so hard for him and last Friday he finally nailed his interview. I can’t be more happy for him! And I’m glad to see him thrilled of his accomplishment too. All we gotta to do now is wish that he passes his 6-week training and eventually be a certified Technical Support Representative. Yeah baby!

    For love of Murakami
Last Friday, Bheng asked me if I could join her buy a book at National Bookstore. Like she really had to ask! Bookstores are my haven. When we got there, I was fortunate to get my hands on the last copies of the two Murakami books that I didn’t have yet. — Please don’t judge me. In my defense, the last day of the 20% sale was nearing, the books I bought were the last copies, and I just received my half-month’s salary, so I think I’m entitled to this kind of splurge. lol. And it’s not like I’m shopping for other stuff too. Just books, I swear. I haven’t even bought a shirt, pants or shoes in months! :D As of today, I have in my possession 8 books by Haruki Murakami, 4 of which I haven’t read yet. I’ll be over my Murakami marathon soon.. It’s time to move on to other authors. Recommendations please.

    Homeward Bound
I’m also pleased to say that I’m going home next month for a 10-day vacay. It’s time to put those rotting Vacation Leaves to good use. I already bought my tickets last Wednesday and at such a discount too. The usual two-way domestic flight tickets cost almost 6,000 Php, but I bought mine at 2,700 Php only. Pretty good bargain huh? I love the way these airline carriers are competing head-on against each other these days. The stunts they’re pulling are greatly beneficial to someone like me who hails from way down South. :D I can’t wait to see my mom and dad. I haven’t seen them in almost a year, can you believe that? I miss them so much. <3 I’m also gonna schedule meet-ups with old friends, churchmates, and high school classmates which I failed to do last year. This is gonna be fun. :)

Thank you, God, for all your blessings. You’re the best!
